Antibiotics are so effective for many conditions that doctors use them frequently, which, unfortunately, has created a condition called antibiotic resistance. This means that bacteria are becoming stronger than the antibiotics designed to destroy them, and that a single course of antibiotics may no longer be enough to eliminate an infection. Infections can linger, become more serious. Some patients need intravenous IV's to completely eliminate infections.
How can you get the most out of your antibiotics and make sure that one course will get rid of an infection?
A recent study suggests that drinking green tea while taking antibiotics will increase their effectiveness by as much as 300 percent. In addition, green tea made 20 percent of drug resistant bacteria strains susceptible to antibiotic therapy. That means that bacteria that, under normal circumstances, would have not been affected by antibiotic therapy can be eliminated using a combination of antibiotics and green tea.
Green tea is great stuff. It is used in several traditional Chinese medicinal formulas, and consumed as a daily beverage all over Asia.
The health benefits of green tea are astounding. Here are just a few:
- reduces risk of esophageal cancer by as much as 60 percent
- inhibits growth of cancer cells
- lowers cholesterol
- inhibits formation of blood clots
- prevents food poisoning and dental plaque
- speeds weight loss
One note of caution: Green tea does contain caffeine, so don't drink it too soon before bedtime. The one ill effect that you could experience is insomnia.
